Angled Plantation Shutters

An angled plantation shutter is a custom-fabricated shutter built for windows with one or more sides that run at an angle rather than straight across, including triangular windows, trapezoidal windows, and any opening where the top or bottom edge follows a diagonal line rather than a horizontal one. These windows are common in A-frame homes, rooms with vaulted or cathedral ceilings, stairwells, and gable ends where the roofline dictates the shape of the window opening below it.

The problem with angled windows is straightforward: no standard rectangular shutter can follow a diagonal edge cleanly. A panel cut to a bounding rectangle leaves a visible gap along the angled side. A blind hung from a horizontal headrail bunches incorrectly against a diagonal frame and gaps at one corner or the other.

A custom-fabricated angled plantation shutter solves this by following the exact profile of the opening, with a frame built to your submitted side measurements so every edge of the shutter aligns with every edge of the window.

Shutter Supplies manufactures every angled plantation shutter to your submitted measurements in your chosen material, color, and orientation, fabricated in our Houston facility with a 13-year warranty covering materials and workmanship.

What Is an Angled Plantation Shutter?

An angled plantation shutter is a shutter panel with a non-rectangular frame built to match the specific geometry of your window opening. Rather than four sides meeting at right angles, one or more sides of the frame follow the diagonal line of the window, producing a panel that fits the opening exactly rather than approximating it with a rectangular cutoff.

The most common applications are triangular windows in gable ends, where two sides angle inward to a peak at the top, and trapezoidal windows in rooms with sloped ceilings, where one vertical side is taller than the other and the top edge follows the pitch of the roofline diagonally. Both require a shutter fabricated to the actual side measurements of the opening rather than a standard height and width.

The key ordering decision beyond measurements is orientation: left or right.

Orientation determines which side of the panel carries the taller vertical dimension and which side the angle rises or falls toward. A left-orientation angled shutter has the taller vertical measurement on the left side of the panel. A right-orientation shutter has it on the right. Getting this correct before ordering is essential, as a shutter built to the wrong orientation cannot be installed to follow the angle of the window correctly.

Full Customization: Every Option Explained

Every angled plantation shutter order is built to your submitted specifications. Here is what each option controls.

  • Orientation: Left or Right — Determines which side of the panel carries the taller vertical measurement. Stand directly in front of the window and look at the opening. If the taller side of the angled opening is on the left, choose left orientation. If it is on the right, choose right. This must match the actual geometry of your window or the shutter will follow the angle in the wrong direction when installed.
  • Mount Type — Inside mount positions the shutter frame within the window opening, sitting flush with the recess for a built-in appearance. Outside mount attaches the frame to the surrounding wall or trim in front of the opening and suits windows with shallow recess depth or where the surrounding trim profile benefits from an outside-mounted frame.
  • Window Opening Depth — For inside mount, this confirms how much clearance exists within the recess for the angled frame to seat without contacting the glass or window hardware. Entered in whole and decimal inches to ensure the frame is fabricated at the correct depth.
  • Material: Wood or Poly — Basswood hardwood and PVC poly are both available. The right choice depends on the room environment, detailed in the material section below.
  • Color — 12 wood finish colors and 2 poly colors available. Full color options are listed in the material section below.
  • Shutter Gap — Building true to size fabricates the shutter to the exact submitted measurements. Adding a 1/8 inch gap creates a small clearance reduction around the perimeter that eases installation where seasonal wood movement or minor construction variance is a factor.

How to Measure an Angled Window

Angled plantation shutters require three side measurements, collected as Side A, Side B, and Side C in the configurator on this page. For a trapezoidal window, these correspond to the width across the top or bottom of the opening, the taller vertical side height, and the shorter vertical side height. For a triangular window, they correspond to the base width and the two angled sides running from the base corners to the peak.

Take each measurement at the inner edge of the opening for inside mount installations, or at the outer face of the surrounding trim for outside mount. Measure each side individually rather than calculating from the others, as angles in residential construction are not always precisely consistent between the framed opening and the surrounding trim.

If your window has an unusual profile that does not clearly match a triangle or trapezoid, contact Shutter Supplies at 281-704-3838 before ordering and we can help you identify the correct measurements and orientation for your specific window.

Wood vs. Poly: Choosing the Right Material

Shutter Supplies offers angled plantation shutters in two core material types.

  • Wood — Real basswood hardwood is the industry standard for painted plantation shutters, valued for its fine tight grain, smooth paint adhesion, and dimensional stability. Basswood holds its shape reliably at angled frame joints, which is important in a non-rectangular panel where any movement in a mitered corner affects how cleanly the frame sits within the angled opening. Best suited for climate-controlled interior spaces away from sustained moisture.

  • Poly  – Fully synthetic PVC construction that is completely waterproof and will not warp, crack, or deteriorate in high-humidity environments. Poly is the correct material for round windows in bathrooms, coastal homes, or any room where moisture would degrade natural wood over time. For a circular frame where any warping in a single curved section throws the entire profile out of round, poly’s dimensional stability in moisture-prone environments is a meaningful long-term advantage.

FAQs

What is an angled plantation shutter?

An angled plantation shutter is a custom-fabricated shutter built for windows with one or more sides that run diagonally rather than straight across, including triangular windows, trapezoidal windows, and openings shaped by sloped ceilings or rooflines. The frame is built to your submitted side measurements so every edge of the shutter aligns with every edge of the window, rather than approximating the shape with a rectangular panel.

How do I know whether to choose left or right orientation?

Stand directly in front of the window. If the taller vertical side of the opening is on the left, choose left orientation. If it is on the right, choose right. Selecting the wrong orientation produces a shutter that follows the angle in the wrong direction and cannot be installed correctly. Call us at 281-704-3838 before ordering if you want to confirm your orientation.

How do I measure an angled window?

Angled shutters require three side measurements entered as Side A, B, and C in the configurator. For a trapezoidal window these are the top or bottom width and both vertical side heights. For a triangular window these are the base width and both angled sides. Measure each side independently at the inner edge of the opening for inside mount, or at the outer trim face for outside mount.

How long does fabrication and shipping take?

Every angled shutter is custom-built after your order is placed. Standard fabrication takes 5 business days from our Houston facility, with shipping completing in approximately 3 days. Most orders arrive within two weeks of order confirmation.

What warranty applies to angled plantation shutters?

All plantation shutters from Shutter Supplies carry a 13-year warranty covering materials and workmanship across both wood and poly options. Contact us at 281-704-3838 for warranty questions or post-installation support.
