The distinctive feature of plantation shutters is their movable slats, also known as louvers, which may be opened and closed to regulate the amount of light that enters the space. These components hold the solid top and bottom rails, left and right vertical stiles, and each shutter panel. The top and bottom rail sizes are based on the panel’s height and modified to fit your chosen slat size. Smaller rails would compromise the shutter’s stability and overall structural integrity. Midrails, which divide the top and bottom portions of a shutter panel into separate parts so that the slats can move independently above and below the mid-rail, are solid horizontal rails. Compared to the solid material in between the top and bottom tiers of a tier-on-tier style shutter, this allows you variable control over light and privacy and occupies about half the substantial space on a full-height shutter.
