Elongated Sunburst Plantation Shutters

An elongated sunburst plantation shutter is a custom-fabricated decorative shutter built for arched, semi-circular, or elongated arch windows, where the louvers radiate outward from a central point in a fan pattern that follows the curve of the opening rather than running in horizontal parallel lines. The result is a panel that works with the shape of the arch rather than against it, filling the curved opening with a louver arrangement that reads as intentional and architecturally coherent from both inside and outside the home.

Arched windows sit at the top of doorways, above rectangular windows in living spaces, and as standalone accent features in foyers, stairwells, and gable ends. They are among the most architecturally distinctive window types in residential construction, and among the most difficult to treat well.

Standard horizontal louver shutters cannot follow the arc of the frame without cutting the louvers at awkward angles that break the visual rhythm of the panel. The sunburst pattern solves this by orienting the louvers along the radial geometry of the arch itself, so the fan of slats follows the same curve as the window frame and the overall panel looks like it belongs to the opening.

Shutter Supplies manufactures every elongated sunburst plantation shutter to your submitted measurements in your chosen pattern style, material, and color, fabricated in our Houston facility with a 13-year warranty covering materials and workmanship.

What Is an Elongated Sunburst Plantation Shutter?

An elongated sunburst plantation shutter is a fixed decorative panel, not an operable shutter with adjustable horizontal louvers. The louvers are set at fixed angles radiating from a central point at the bottom of the arch, fanning outward to follow the curve of the window perimeter.

Because the louvers are fixed rather than adjustable, the shutter functions primarily as a decorative architectural element that fills the arched opening cleanly, filters light through the fixed louver gaps, and completes the visual treatment of the window without leaving the arch uncovered.

The “elongated” designation refers to the arch shape this shutter is built for. A perfect arch sunburst sits above a semicircular opening where height equals half the width. An elongated sunburst is built for arch shapes where the height-to-width ratio is different, either taller and narrower or shallower and wider than a true semicircle. This makes the elongated sunburst the correct configuration for the wide range of arch proportions found in residential construction that do not conform to a precise perfect arch ratio.

Two pattern styles are available. Sunburst 01 uses a standard radial fan arrangement with louvers of even spacing across the arch. Sunburst 02 uses an alternative pattern arrangement for a different visual result within the same arched frame. The configurator on this page shows both patterns side by side so you can select the style that best suits the architecture of your window and the interior of your home before ordering.

Full Customization: Every Option Explained

Every elongated sunburst plantation shutter order is built to your submitted specifications. Here is what each option controls.

  • Pattern Style: Sunburst 01 or Sunburst 02 — Two radial fan louver arrangements are available, each producing a distinct visual result within the arched frame. Sunburst 01 and Sunburst 02 differ in their louver spacing and arrangement. View both options in the configurator on this page before selecting, as the right choice depends on the scale of the arch and the interior style of the room.
  • Window Opening Depth — Confirms how much clearance exists within the window recess for the shutter panel to seat correctly. Entered in whole and decimal inches during ordering to ensure the panel is fabricated at the correct depth for a clean fit within the opening.
  • Material: Wood or Poly — Basswood hardwood and PVC poly are both available. The right choice depends on the room environment and long-term maintenance priorities, detailed in the material section below.
  • Color — 12 wood finish colors and 2 poly colors available. Full color options listed in the material section below.
  • Shutter Gap — Building true to size fabricates the shutter to the exact submitted measurements. Adding a 1/8 inch gap creates a small clearance reduction around the perimeter that eases installation where seasonal wood movement or minor construction variance is a factor.

How to Measure an Arch Window for an Elongated Sunburst Shutter

Elongated sunburst shutters require two measurements, collected as Side A and Side B in the configurator on this page, along with the overall width and height of the opening. Side A corresponds to the width of the arch at its widest horizontal point. Side B corresponds to the height of the arch from the spring line, where the curve begins, to the peak at the top of the arch.

For a perfect semicircle, Side B will equal half of Side A. For an elongated arch that is taller or shallower than a perfect semicircle, Side A and Side B will differ, and both measurements are needed to fabricate the correct panel profile. Take each measurement at the inner edge of the opening for a clean fit within the recess.

If the arch sits above a rectangular window and you are ordering both a sunburst panel for the arch and a rectangular shutter for the window below, contact Shutter Supplies at 281-704-3838 to ensure consistent material, color, and frame profile across both panels before placing either order.

Wood vs. Poly: Choosing the Right Material

Shutter Supplies offers elongated sunburst plantation shutters in two core material types.

  • Wood — Real basswood hardwood is the industry standard for painted plantation shutters, valued for its fine tight grain, smooth paint adhesion, and dimensional stability. For a fixed decorative panel like the elongated sunburst, basswood holds the radial louver arrangement reliably over time without the joints pulling or the panel face distorting. Best suited for climate-controlled interior spaces away from sustained moisture.

  • Poly — Fully synthetic PVC construction that is completely waterproof and will not warp, crack, or deteriorate in high-humidity environments. Poly is the correct material for round windows in bathrooms, coastal homes, or any room where moisture would degrade natural wood over time. For a circular frame where any warping in a single curved section throws the entire profile out of round, poly’s dimensional stability in moisture-prone environments is a meaningful long-term advantage.

FAQs

What is an elongated sunburst plantation shutter?

An elongated sunburst plantation shutter is a custom decorative panel for arched and semi-circular windows where the louvers radiate outward from a central point in a fan pattern that follows the curve of the opening. Unlike standard horizontal louver shutters, the sunburst pattern works with the geometry of the arch rather than cutting across it, producing a panel that looks architecturally integrated with the window.

Are elongated sunburst shutters operable or fixed?

Elongated sunburst shutters are fixed decorative panels. The louvers are set at fixed radial angles and are not adjustable. The shutter filters light through the fixed louver gaps and functions as a decorative architectural element rather than an operable light control panel.

What is the difference between Sunburst 01 and Sunburst 02?

Both are radial fan louver arrangements built to fit the same arched opening, but they differ in louver spacing and arrangement, producing distinct visual results. View both options in the configurator on this page before selecting. The right choice depends on the scale of your arch and the interior style of the room.

How long does fabrication and shipping take?

Every elongated sunburst shutter is custom-built after your order is placed. Standard fabrication takes 5 business days from our Houston facility, with shipping completing in approximately 3 days. Most orders arrive within two weeks of order confirmation.
