Pentagon Plantation Shutters

A pentagon plantation shutter is a custom-fabricated shutter built to fit a five-sided window opening, where the frame follows each of the five sides of the opening precisely so the panel sits cleanly within the window without gaps at any corner.

Pentagon windows are most commonly found in gable ends and upper-story facades where a rectangular or square window is topped with a pointed or pitched peak that follows the roofline, producing a house-shaped profile.

They add architectural character to a facade, but they present the same fundamental problem as any non-rectangular window: no standard rectangular shutter can follow a five-sided frame without leaving the angled upper section uncovered.

A custom-fabricated pentagon plantation shutter solves this by following the exact geometry of the opening to your submitted side measurements, treating the window’s five-sided shape as an architectural feature rather than an obstacle.

Shutter Supplies manufactures every pentagon plantation shutter in your chosen material and color, fabricated in our Houston facility with a 13-year warranty covering materials and workmanship.

What Is a Pentagon Plantation Shutter?

A pentagon plantation shutter is a shutter panel with a five-sided frame built to match the specific profile of your pentagon window opening. The most common residential pentagon window has a rectangular lower section topped by a symmetrical pointed peak, giving it the profile of a classic house shape. The bottom four sides form the rectangle and the fifth side is the angled peak at the top, where two diagonal sides meet at a central point.

Because the peak angle varies between homes depending on roof pitch and window proportions, no two pentagon windows are necessarily the same. The angle at the peak of a steeply pitched roofline produces a taller, narrower point than a shallower pitch does. A custom-fabricated pentagon shutter built to the three key measurements of your specific opening accounts for this variation and produces a panel that fits the exact profile of your window rather than an approximation of it.

Pentagon windows are typically accent features rather than primary windows, found in gable ends, dormers, and upper-story positions where they add visual interest to the exterior of the home.

As with other specialty shape shutters, the goal is a treatment that works with the geometry of the window and completes it cleanly, rather than one that covers the rectangular portion while leaving the peaked top section exposed or untreated.

Full Customization: Every Option Explained

Every pentagon plantation shutter order is built to your submitted specifications. Here is what each option controls.

  • Mount Type — Inside mount positions the shutter frame within the pentagon opening, sitting flush with the window recess for a built-in appearance that makes the shutter look like a permanent part of the window. Outside mount attaches the frame to the surrounding wall or trim in front of the opening and suits windows with shallow recess depth or where the surrounding trim profile benefits from an outside-mounted frame.
  • Window Opening Depth — For inside mount, this confirms how much clearance exists within the recess for the five-sided frame to seat without contacting the glass or any window hardware. Entered in whole and decimal inches during ordering to ensure the frame is fabricated at the correct depth for a clean, binding-free fit at all five corners.
  • Material: Wood or Poly — Basswood hardwood and PVC poly are both available. The right choice depends on the room environment and long-term maintenance priorities, detailed in the material section below.
  • Color — 12 wood finish colors and 2 poly colors available. Full options listed in the material section below.
  • Shutter Gap — Building true to size fabricates the shutter to the exact submitted measurements. Adding a 1/8 inch gap creates a small clearance reduction around the perimeter that eases installation where seasonal wood movement or minor construction variance is a factor.

How to Measure a Pentagon Window

Pentagon plantation shutters require three measurements, collected as Side A, Side B, and Side C in the configurator on this page. For the most common house-shaped pentagon window, these correspond to the full width across the base of the opening, the height of the rectangular section from the base to the point where the two angled sides begin, and the height of the triangular peaked section from that point to the tip of the peak at the top center.

Take each measurement at the inner edge of the opening for inside mount installations, or at the outer face of the surrounding trim for outside mount. Measure the width at the widest horizontal point of the opening, which for a symmetrical pentagon will be at the base. Measure the rectangular height along one of the straight vertical sides. Measure the peak height vertically from the spring line to the highest point of the peak at the center.

If your pentagon window has an unusual proportion or profile that does not clearly match this three-measurement format, contact Shutter Supplies at 281-704-3838 before placing your order and we can help you identify the correct measurements for your specific window.

Wood vs. Poly: Choosing the Right Material

Shutter Supplies offers pentagon plantation shutters in two core material types.

  • Wood — Real basswood hardwood is the industry standard for painted plantation shutters, valued for its fine tight grain, smooth paint adhesion, and dimensional stability at the mitered joints that define the angled corners of a pentagon frame. Basswood holds its shape reliably across seasonal temperature and humidity variation, which is important at the peak joint where two diagonal frame members meet at a point. Best suited for climate-controlled interior spaces away from sustained moisture.

  • Poly — Fully synthetic PVC construction that is completely waterproof and will not warp, crack, or deteriorate in high-humidity environments. Poly is the correct material for round windows in bathrooms, coastal homes, or any room where moisture would degrade natural wood over time. For a circular frame where any warping in a single curved section throws the entire profile out of round, poly’s dimensional stability in moisture-prone environments is a meaningful long-term advantage.

FAQs

What is a pentagon plantation shutter?

A pentagon plantation shutter is a custom-fabricated shutter built to fit a five-sided window opening, with a frame that follows each of the five sides precisely, so the panel sits cleanly within the window at every corner. The most common residential pentagon window has a rectangular lower section topped by a symmetrical pointed peak that follows the pitch of the roofline above it.

How do I measure a pentagon window for a custom shutter?

Pentagon shutters require three measurements: the full width at the base of the opening, the height of the rectangular section below the peak, and the height of the peaked section from where the diagonal sides begin to the tip at the top center. These are entered as Side A, B, and C in the configurator. Call us at 281-704-3838 before ordering if you want to confirm your measurements.

Can I get a pentagon shutter for a window with an unusual peak angle?

Yes. Because every pentagon shutter is custom-fabricated to your submitted measurements, the angle of the peak is determined by the Side B and Side C measurements you provide rather than a fixed standard. A steeply pitched peak and a shallow pitched peak both produce correct results as long as the measurements are taken accurately from your specific window.

How long does fabrication and shipping take?

Every pentagon shutter is custom-built after your order is placed. Standard fabrication takes 5 business days from our Houston facility, with shipping completing in approximately 3 days. Most orders arrive within two weeks of order confirmation.

What warranty applies to pentagon plantation shutters?

All plantation shutters from Shutter Supplies carry a 13-year warranty covering materials and workmanship across both wood and poly options. Contact us at 281-704-3838 for warranty questions or post-installation support.
