Perfect Arch Plantation Shutters

A perfect arch plantation shutter is a custom-fabricated shutter designed specifically to fit the full semicircular arch shape found above windows and doorways in traditional, craftsman, and contemporary architecture.

If you are searching for arch window shutters that follow the exact contour of your opening rather than approximating it with a generic shape, Shutter Supplies manufactures every perfect arch shutter to your submitted dimensions, in your chosen material, color, and mount type, with no stock resizing and no off-the-shelf approximations.

With over 25 years of manufacturing experience, we produce specialty shape shutters that most suppliers will not attempt, and the perfect arch is one of our most requested configurations. Each shutter is built in our Houston facility and ships directly to you with a 13-year warranty covering materials and workmanship.

What Is a Perfect Arch Plantation Shutter?

A perfect arch shutter covers a window or aperture with a full semicircular arch profile, where the top of the opening forms a complete half-circle with equal height on both sides from the center point. This is the most common arch shape found in residential architecture, most frequently positioned at the tops of windows or above doorways as a dedicated accent opening.

Unlike rectangular plantation shutters, which open and close on hinges for daily operation, perfect arch shutters are typically installed as fixed decorative panels that complement the arch shape while providing light diffusion and privacy.

The louvers on a perfect arch shutter are arranged in a tilt sunburst pattern, meaning they radiate outward from the center focal point of the arch in the same direction as the arch itself. This creates a visually cohesive result that echoes the natural geometry of the window rather than working against it.

Standard off-the-shelf window treatments cannot accommodate a true arch shape without cutting, improvising, or leaving gaps at the curved edges.

A custom-fabricated perfect arch shutter follows the exact curve of the opening from the submitted dimensions, producing a clean, seamless fit that makes the shutter appear to be a permanent architectural element of the window rather than an afterthought.

Full Customization: Every Option Explained

Every perfect arch plantation shutter order is built to your submitted specifications. Here is what each option means so you can order with confidence.

  • Tilt Sunburst — The tilt sunburst is the louver arrangement used in perfect arch shutters, where individual louvers radiate outward from the center point of the arch in a fan pattern that mirrors the curve of the opening. This arrangement is the defining visual characteristic of an arch shutter and the only louver configuration that works correctly with a semicircular shape. The result is a shutter face that looks intentional and architecturally integrated from both inside and outside the home.

  • Mount Type — Inside mount positions the shutter frame within the arch opening itself, sitting flush with the window recess for a clean, built-in appearance that makes the shutter look like part of the window architecture. Outside mount attaches the frame to the wall or trim surrounding the arch opening, sitting in front of the recess rather than inside it. Outside mount is the right choice for arch openings with shallow depth or where the surrounding trim work benefits from the added visual framing the outside mount provides.

  • Window Opening Depth — For inside mount installations, this measurement confirms how much clearance exists within the arch recess for the frame to sit without contacting the glass or any window hardware. Entered in whole and decimal inches during the ordering process, this measurement ensures the shutter frame is fabricated at the correct depth to sit cleanly within the opening.

  • Shutter Gap — Building true to size produces a snug fit within or around the arch opening based on the submitted dimensions. Adding a 1/8 inch gap creates a small clearance reduction on each side, which can ease installation and reduce the chance of the frame binding against the arch surround in environments where seasonal wood movement is a factor.

Wood vs. Poly: Choosing the Right Material

Shutter Supplies offers perfect arch plantation shutters in two core material types. The right choice depends on the room environment and long-term maintenance priorities.

  • Wood — Real basswood hardwood is the industry standard for painted plantation shutters, valued for its fine tight grain, smooth paint adhesion, and consistent finish quality across curved and radiating louver arrangements. Basswood holds its shape reliably across the sunburst pattern without warping or pulling at the louver pin connections, which is particularly important in arch configurations where each louver is a different length. Best suited for climate-controlled interior spaces away from sustained moisture.

  • Poly — Fully synthetic PVC construction that is completely waterproof and will not warp, crack, or deteriorate in high-humidity environments. Poly is the correct material for bathrooms, laundry rooms, kitchens, and coastal homes where moisture and salt air would degrade natural wood over time. For arch openings in moisture-prone rooms, poly provides the same custom fit and visual result with long-term stability that wood cannot match in those conditions.

Perfect Arch vs. 1/4 Perfect Arch: Which Do You Need?

Shutter Supplies manufactures two variations of the perfect arch shutter to accommodate the two most common arch window proportions found in residential architecture.

The perfect arch shutter is designed for windows where the arch forms a full semicircle, meaning the height of the arch section equals exactly half the width of the opening. If your arch opening is 48 inches wide, the arch rises 24 inches from the spring line to the peak. This is the classic arch proportion most often found above entry doors and prominent living room windows.

The 1/4 perfect arch shutter is designed for windows where the arch rises only one quarter of the total opening width rather than half. These windows have a shallower, wider arch curve that does not form a full semicircle.

If you are unsure which variation matches your window, measure the width of the opening at the spring line where the arch begins, then measure the height from that line to the peak of the arch. If the height equals half the width, you need the perfect arch. If the height is significantly less than half the width, the 1/4 perfect arch is the correct configuration.

FAQs

What is a perfect arch plantation shutter?

A perfect arch plantation shutter is a custom-fabricated shutter built to cover a full semicircular arch window opening, where the arch height equals exactly half the opening width. Louvers are arranged in a tilt sunburst pattern that radiates from the center point of the arch, following the natural geometry of the window for a seamless, architecturally integrated result.

How do I know if I need a perfect arch or a 1/4 perfect arch shutter?

Measure the width of your arch opening at the spring line where the curve begins, then measure the height from that line to the peak of the arch. If the height equals half the width, you need the perfect arch. If the height is significantly less than half the width, the 1/4 perfect arch is the correct configuration for your window.

Do perfect arch shutters open and close like regular plantation shutters?

Perfect arch shutters are typically installed as fixed decorative panels rather than operable hinged shutters. The tilt sunburst louver arrangement is built into the arch shape and provides light diffusion and privacy as a stationary panel. For windows with both a rectangular lower section and an arch above, the arch shutter is paired with a separate rectangular panel configuration for the lower portion.

How long does fabrication and shipping take?

Every perfect arch shutter is custom-built after your order is placed. Standard fabrication takes 5 business days from our Houston facility, with shipping completing in approximately 3 days. Most orders arrive within two weeks of order confirmation.

What warranty applies to perfect arch plantation shutters?

All plantation shutters from Shutter Supplies carry a 13-year warranty covering materials and workmanship across both wood and poly material options. Contact us at 281-704-3838 for warranty questions or post-installation support.
